Do you have a strategy when it comes to your health?
Have you set goals, both short- and long-term, for your health?
Do you know how you will get from where you are now to where you want to be?
Many of us do not set goals nor a strategy when we want to lose weight.
This is one of the reasons why most New Year Resolutions fail. We have all been there: we got a new gym membership in December, we started off well in January but then completely lost motivation by March. Sounds familiar?
WHY do our weight loss plans fall through? Usually, because our goals:
Are unrealistic
Lack clarity on how to achieve them; no strategy in place
Are too overwhelming & boring!
This year, make your goals fun, achievable, and sustainable! How?
1) Set realistic goals
Make sure your goals are realistic and break each goal down into small steps. Every time you achieve 1 small step, celebrate your success to stay motivated to achieve the next small step.
Consistently repeating small steps will eventually lead you to BIG goals! This works so well because you feel like you put in little effort for great results.
2) Set a strategy to get from A to B
Draw up a step-by-step strategy to plan HOW you will get from A (where we are now) to B (where we want to get). You need to be clear on which steps to take and map out alternatives in case of 'deviations' / obstacles while you are on your journey.
For example, what do you do in case of overeating? What do you plan to order when you eat out in a restaurant? What do you do when you have no time to cook? By planning ahead on what to do in those circumstances, you will be able to adapt when things do not go as planned!
'Failing to plan, is planning to fail' - Therefore, plan ahead, be prepared, and stay flexible to succeed.
3) Have FUN & get SUPPORT
Fun and support often go hand in hand. The more you involve your friends and family to support you, the more they will be inspired by you and your goal! Soon you will likely have your beloved ones join you to the gym, going on long walks, swimming, attending a dance class, etc.
By having your beloved ones join you on your journey to wellbeing, you create a support system. This is crucial in making sure you do not feel alone and to hold you accountable. For example, when you do not feel like working out but you promised your partner to work out together, you will see how much more dedicated you are in living up to your promise!
Lastly, HAVE FUN! Do what you LOVE, or else you will not keep it up. By nature, we move away from things that are not pleasurable. So if you have always hated going to the gym, do not push yourself this year to go anyway! Find something else you enjoy like running, dancing, inline skating, hula hoop... whatever you love doing! Be kind to yourself, be patient.
We wish you ALL the best for this wonderful new year ahead! Happy New Year to You!
